Exporting and importing open up vast new markets. These may not be the first new markets you venture into after starting a business. However, certainly consider them down the road after you have proved the viability and success of your product.
The federal government greatly encourages exporting your product to other countries. The US Commerce Department is the agency to contact. They have a wealth of information on countries, products, regulations, and resources. They often present seminars on relevant international business topics.
Importing products from other countries to sell in the US can be quite profitable. Importing materials to implement in your product can also be profitable. US Customs is the federal agency to contact regarding all the rules.
If you do become involved with international trade, take advantage of all the government and private resources available to assist you. Locate your closest World Trade Center to see what they offer. Check the local colleges and universities for classes, seminars, and counseling.
